Le principal inconv\u00e9nient des membranes ionom\u00e8res comme le Nafion dans les piles \u00e0 combustible \u00e0 m\u00e9thanol direct (DMFC) \u2013 Figure 8 &#8211; est que la conductivit\u00e9 ionique du Nafion augmente avec le niveau d&#8217;hydratation\u00a0; leur perm\u00e9abilit\u00e9 relativement importante au m\u00e9thanol entra\u00eene une d\u00e9gradation radicale du rendement de la pile \u00e0 combustible. \u00a0Le traitement de surface par plasma micro-ondes de ces membranes peut r\u00e9duire la perm\u00e9abilit\u00e9 au m\u00e9thanol. Elle fournit un flux de gaz homog\u00e8ne au catalyseur et contr\u00f4le la teneur en eau de la pile. En particulier, la gestion de l&#8217;eau sur une large gamme de courbes de polarisation tension \/ courant est tr\u00e8s importante pour l&#8217;efficacit\u00e9 de la pile. Cependant, les GDLs sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement constitu\u00e9s d&#8217;un mat\u00e9riau fortement hydrophobe, ce qui est essentiel pour une bonne gestion de l&#8217;eau. Lorsque la GDL est recouverte d&#8217;une plaque perfor\u00e9e, seules les zones non couvertes de la surface de la GDL sont modifi\u00e9es par le traitement plasma. Cela est d\u00fb au fait que la membrane d&#8217;une pile \u00e0 combustible sans GDL trait\u00e9 par plasma s&#8217;ass\u00e8che, en particulier \u00e0 des densit\u00e9s de courant plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es.
